Auburn Police Department debuts DARE outreach vehicle

November 22 2024

Auburn, Ala. – The Auburn Police Department (APD) is proud to announce the debut of its first-ever DARE outreach vehicle, a bold addition to its community outreach efforts aimed at educating and empowering young people to make safe, healthy choices.

The striking Dodge Charger, now wrapped in vibrant graphics promoting the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program, has a unique backstory. The vehicle was seized during a police K9 drug bust and repurposed as a symbol of the police department's commitment to steering youth away from drugs and risky behaviors.

“This car represents transformation,” said Auburn Police Chief Cedric Anderson. “It’s a tangible reminder that positive change is possible. By converting it into a vehicle for DARE outreach, we’re not just raising awareness about drug prevention — we’re fostering trust and building relationships with our community.”

The Charger features an eye-catching design with vibrant colors and the program’s iconic logo. It will be used during school visits, parades and community events, serving as a mobile classroom and conversation starter for officers.

The DARE program has long been a cornerstone of the department’s outreach initiatives, educating children on the dangers of drug use, bullying and other high-risk behaviors. The community can also expect to see this vehicle displayed at APD’s annual DARE Camp, a five-day summer program for graduating fifth graders, further enhancing the program’s visibility and impact.

“Kids are naturally drawn to the car, and that opens the door for meaningful conversations,” said School Resource Officer Brandon Elliott, one of APD's three DARE officers. “It’s about meeting kids where they are and giving them tools to make smart choices.”

The Auburn Police Department remains committed to promoting safety and education within the community. The DARE outreach vehicle is a symbol of that dedication and a powerful tool in fostering a brighter future for the city’s youth.
